A very good performance

[women’s volleyball v Barnet & Southgate]

Wednesday 12/10/2022

This A. o. C. cup game was our first women’s match since December 2021 and included only 2 players from last seasons team, all the others having moved on. Our visitors were our friends and rivals from Barnet & Southgate college, who always mount a stern challenge, and this certainly proved to be the case as they won the match convincingly by 3 -0.

A result does not, however, tell the full story as this was a very impressive and heartening effort by the LSC women. They displayed great mobility, a determination to retrieve seemingly lost balls, variation in their attack and consistency in their serving.

There was a huge disparity between the two teams in terms of playing experience. B & S were an established team, having played together all of last season, and included individual players with many years of playing experience. LSC by contrast  had just the two players from last season [and that was their first year of playing], three newly recruited students who have come to the college with some playing experience, and seven others in the squad who were in a competitive situation for the first time having only trained over the last four weeks.

The set scores of 14-25, 13-25, 12-25 show that LSC were very much in the match, and we did indeed lead in the early part of each set. Every point was well contested and the rallies were long, exciting and pleasing to both the trained and untrained eye.

The squad was made up of:

Vitalija Martinkute, Damaris Quinonez, Nuria Santo, Esme Jones, Haadiya Ali, Aaliyah Ali, Zaynab Khan-Phatan, Snezhana Babaasanova, Galena Doncheva, Scarlett Sweeney, Ana Seidi.
