The sports department had a busy weekend with the men’s volleyball team, women’s basketball team, women’s badminton team and a cross-country runner representing the London region at the AoC National Finals. The students did an amazing job and represented both the London region and the college with pride.

The men’s volleyball team faced stiff competition and were competing in the tougher of two pools which resulted in them narrowingly missing out on a place in the semi-finals of the competition. The men’s volleyball player of the tournament goes to Ilia Varbanov from tutor group 63Q who scored a game-winning serve in the team’s Saturday evening game and then captained the side in the team’s final game on the Sunday morning.

The women’s basketball team also faced tough competition throughout the weekend, facing a strong West Midlands team in their opening game. The team finished the tournament in 6th place. The women’s basketball player of the tournament goes to Kadiatu Kamara from tutor group 62P. The women’s badminton team competed across two different venues over the weekend and arguably had the toughest test finishing in 7th place.

Jordan Elongo from tutor group 73E represented the London region in cross country which included a hilly 5k course on the Saturday morning. The course stretched across the University of Nottingham campus, which included a steep 1k climb before a further 500m descent to the finish line. Much like his tutor James Hankey at the weekend, Jordan worked hard to complete the race and completed the course in 20 minutes 24 seconds, finishing the race in 43rd place.

A huge well done also has to go to the Hebert Amoah from tutor group 63Q who is one of the department’s Sports Ambassadors. Hebert is also an AoC Student Leader and volunteered at the National Finals supporting the pan-disability football and the cross-country event.

Securing the opportunity to represent London at the AoC National Finals is a huge achievement in itself so please do congratulate them if you happen to see them or teach them.
