Message from the Senior Leadership Team This is the first newsletter of this term, and we would like to take this opportunity to welcome
parents of new and returning students to the Leyton Sixth Form College community and to share some key information, significant dates and details of upcoming events.
This half term is very important in ensuring students’ future success. Our second year A Level students (Year 13) will be working on the areas for development identified in the summer assessment, exploring new units and topics and preparing for their mock exams next term.
Students in the second year of their vocational programme will have mock exams before the Christmas break and are currently working towards assignment deadlines for their current units.
There is an even higher expectation regarding the amount of independent study that students will undertake in the final year of the course. Whilst this will vary slightly, on average they should be doing between 15-18 of a combination of self-directed learning and homework each week.
All Year 2 students will be further researching their progression options and working on their applications for university, apprenticeships or employment. Please see information below regarding key dates for UCAS applications. |

For students who under-achieved last year, this term is their last opportunity to make the changes required to ensure that they fulfil their potential. Students in Year One (Year 12) or on Level 1 and Level 2 programmes will be settling into college life and developing the study habits and routines that are essential to academic success.
For all our students, attendance and punctuality are key to making progress and achieving high grades. We very much appreciate your support in ensuring that they attend all their timetabled lessons on time.
We will be providing you with a Progress Report with details on how your child is doing on their course shortly before the October Half Term break. Parents of Year 2 students will also be invited to attend our online Parents and Carers Consultation Evening on 15th October.
A further Consultation Evening will take place on 13th January for Year 1 students. However, if we have any significant concerns with the progress that your young person is making, we will contact you before then. We hope the information contained within this newsletter will help you to support your child to achieve as highly as they can and to make the most of their time at college.

Student Aspire Days
Friday 17th October will be our first Student Aspire Day of the year. This is an opportunity for students to engage in activities that are designed to support their future progression to either university, apprenticeships or careers. This means that students do not need to attend lessons and can work independently from home.
Year 1 students will be registering for the Aspire Award and year 2 completing their UCAS/Apprenticeship applications, as well as exploring University and Apprenticeship choices and Open Days. Parent Portal
We have sent out activation emails for our Parent Portal. This will help you follow your young person’s education and progress. You will be able to see their timetable, attendance, Progress Reports and review Interventions and disciplinary actions. You can also report absences, email teachers, and update contact details.
If you are having problems accessing this or have any other questions regarding the Parent Portal, more guidance can be found in the Parents and Carers section of our website. |

Bursary Support and Free Meals
The college has funding to provide financial support for students who have the greatest financial need. Students who meet the eligibility criteria will be able to apply for a college bursary and/or free meals. Please can you ensure you submit all the required evidence to speed the process of the review. You can find more information about bursary on the college website.
If your child has already applied for bursary but is still waiting to hear back on the application, please bear with us as we have a large number of applications that have received this year. We are currently looking at applications by the order of the submission date, so please bear with us. We will contact you once we assess your application.
The first main payment will be made on the last day of October half term, 3rd Nov. If you have any queries, please contact bursary@leyton.ac.uk. |
Community Relations
We have received several complaints from local residents about students sitting on their walls, dropping litter or congregating in large groups. Please could you remind your young person about the importance of being considerate and respectful to our neighbours, many of whom are elderly or have young children. Students who repeatedly fall short of these expectations will face disciplinary sanctions. |

Career Planning and Progression
The Careers, Progression and Skills team will be hosting 2 online Information sessions on 21th October 2025 (Tuesday) at 17:00 and 18:00h, to discuss and answer your questions on Progression Opportunities for students.

If you have any issues accessing the event, please contact us by email (careers@leyton.ac.uk) so we can send a direct invitation to the meeting.
As a parent/carer you can use the same platform (UNIFROG) students have access to explore what options are available, search for opportunities and successfully apply for the best next-step after school. To access the website go to www.unifrog.org/student and click ‘Sign in for the first time’. You’ll be asked for some details and a Sign up Code (SIEQParents).

UCAS Information 2026 entry dates
Students making applications for progression to Higher Education are working towards the following internal deadlines (NB, these are earlier than the deadlines set by UCAS, to allow college staff to undertake the necessary checks and resolve any errors or omissions):
15th October: Deadline for early-applications (applications to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and for most courses in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine/science)
Friday 28th November: Deadline for applications for most undergraduate courses for equal consideration. Students are advised to apply as early as possible. 16th January 2026: final deadline for UCAS applications to be processed |
