The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a key part of student life at Leyton Sixth Form College. We’re proud to have the highest number of DofE completions of all Further Education (FE) and Sixth Form Colleges (SFC) in England, and to present 67% of all awards given out within the Greater London FE and SFC sector.
Since launching the programme in 2002, Leyton Sixth Form College has operated under its own independent DofE licence, offering all three award levels, Bronze, Silver, and Gold, completely free of charge to our students.
Why Join the DofE Programme?
The DofE Award is a globally recognised achievement that builds confidence, discipline, and resilience, while developing essential leadership, teamwork, and communication skills.
It’s not just about the award itself; the experiences you gain last well beyond your time at college. Participation in DofE looks fantastic on UCAS personal statements and apprenticeship applications, helping you stand out from the crowd. It’s an ideal complement to your studies, offering a chance to broaden your skills and life experiences.
Programme Structure and Participation
At Leyton Sixth Form College, we typically have:
- Bronze Award: up to 120 students
- Silver Award: around 60 students (usually completed in Year 1)
- Gold Award: around 40 students (started in Year 2 and can be completed up to your 25th birthday, with full college support)
Each level includes three main sections: Physical, Skills, and Volunteering, which are completed over a set period. You’ll dedicate a minimum of one hour per week to each section, allowing the programme to fit comfortably around your studies, hobbies, and social life.

Leyton Sixth Form College offers a wide range of in-house activities to help you complete each section, so you’ll always have exciting and meaningful options to choose from.
