What is the course about?

Mathematics is one of the great creations of human intelligence. It is the language of science, technology and engineering. It is essential for architecture and design as well as economics and medicine; even art relies on mathematics to some extent. If you enjoy mathematics and have a creative streak you should certainly consider studying the subject at a higher level.

 

Duration of course

1 year for AS.
2 years for A Level.

 

What topics will be studied?

AS Level
You will take Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics.
• Pure Maths includes topics such as algebra, geometry, exponentials, differentiation, integration, functions, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms
• Statistics looks at topics such as representation and summary of data, probability, correlation and regression, discrete random variables, the binomial distribution and hypothesis testing.
• Mechanics includes vectors and forces, constant acceleration, motion and time graphs, Newton’s laws and equilibrium.

A Level
• More Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics

 

What do i need to study this subject?

You will need to have GCSE grade 7 in Maths and a G Score of 36. If you have a grade 6 we will accept you if you successfully complete the initial assessment test.

 

What can i do to prepare myself to study this subject?

Revise GCSE higher tier algebra, fractions, indices, quadratic equations and surds. Read a book like ‘Why do buses come in threes? by Rob Eastway & Jeremy Wyndham.

 

Where can this lead me?

Mathematics AS/A Level is useful in a wide variety of fields of study in higher education. For example: science, medicine, engineering, business, computing, accounting, economics and psychology are just some of the areas where the subject is useful.
