What is the course about?

This subject enters the world of Einstein, building up a substantial knowledge of Pure and Applied Mathematics. An enthusiasm for Mathematics is essential for this demanding course. We would recommend that you take this option if you are very keen on following Mathematics related subjects at University.

 

AS level Further Maths

AS Further maths can be taken in either the first year or the second year of study. You will take a combination of Further Pure Maths, Mechanics, and Statistics.
• Further Pure Maths includes series, complex numbers, numerical solutions, matrix algebra and proof.
• Mechanics includes kinematics, dynamics, statics of a particle, momentum and impulse.
• Statistics includes the Poisson distribution, continuous random variables, hypothesis testing and Chi squared tests.

 

A level Further Maths

A level Further Maths is only available to those students who have studied AS Further Maths in the first year.
You will take:
• Further Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics.

 

Duration of course

1 year AS Further Maths.
2 years for A Level.

 

What do i need to study this subject?

You will need to have a GCSE grade 7 in Maths and a G Score of 36.

 

What can i do to prepare myself to study this subject?

Show a keen interest in mathematics more generally and read a book like ‘Fermat’s Last Theorem by Simon Singh.

 

Where can this lead me?

You may progress to higher education to study Maths, Economics, Business, Accountancy, Computing, Engineering and many more subjects. There are also many careers where Maths is useful, e.g. accountancy, actuarial work, engineering, etc. If you are considering applying for a Maths related course at a competitive University you are strongly advised to do Further Maths at least to AS Level.
