WHAT IS THE COURSE ABOUT?

The Level 2 Diploma in art and design provides students with an introduction to a broad range of creative skills and techniques in all areas of art. This includes two-dimensional and three-dimensional design and a range of hand-made and digital approaches. Students will learn the skills required to produce work to a deadline and organise work in a sketchbook as well as displaying work in a professional way and studying the work of a wide range of designers and artists.

 

DURATION OF COURSE:

This course is a one-year course. Grading is through internal assessment and external moderation.

 

WHAT UNITS/TOPICS WILL BE STUDIED?

The course comprises a number of preliminary units in which students must meet the criteria to pass. Grades are awarded on the confirmatory Final Major Project at Pass, Merit or Distinction Level. The first term involves short projects and workshops exploring key art and design principles such colour, form and composition. This is followed by the final Major Project in which students specialise and produce finished work.

 

WHAT DO I NEED TO STUDY THIS SUBJECT?

G Score: 18
GCSE Art: 4

GCSE Maths and English: 3

A general enthusiasm for the visual arts and a commitment to making practical artwork through lessons and independent practice.

Students who have not studied art and design at GCSE can present a small portfolio of their work at interview/ enrolment which will be taken into consideration.

 

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREPARE MYSELF TO STUDY THIS SUBJECT? 

Visit both large and small museums and galleries in central London and the surrounding area. Keep a sketchbook of drawings, photographs and found images and try to work from direct observation rather than copying from the internet. Keep a record of the art and design which most inspires you.

 

WHERE CAN THIS LEAD ME?

Students often progress onto the UAL Level 3 course in art and design or directly onto a programme of A level subjects where a distinction grade is achieved. Careers in Art include: Artist, Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Technician, Museum Assistant, Stage/ Theatre Design, Advertising, Film, Curating.

 

WHAT ARE THE ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES AS PART OF THIS SUBJECT?

There are many visits to galleries, museums, degree shows and workshops. You will also have the opportunity to enter competitions on a local and national level.
