WHAT IS THE COURSE ABOUT?

Develop appreciation and a critical understanding of the media and their role both historically and currently in society, culture, politics and the economy. Alongside this you will acquire a range of practical skills through creative media production.

In A Level Media Studies, you will study a wide range of topics, including music video, news, TV drama, gaming, radio, advertising, film and magazines.

 

DURATION OF COURSE:

2 years. This course is a two-year linear A level. Grading is through external examinations, internal assessment and external moderation.  

 

WHAT UNITS/TOPICS WILL BE STUDIED?

Paper 1 Media Messages (35%): In this paper you will write about the in-depth case study of newspaper and online news.  You will analyse media language and representations in music video, magazines and advertising

Paper 2 Evolving Media (35%): In this paper the in-depth case study is TV drama. You will also learn about media industries and audiences in video games, radio and film.

Paper 3 Making Media (NEA/coursework) (30%): For the NEA you will design and create a package of linked media products. This might be a music video with a website, or pages from a magazine with a website.

 

 WHAT DO I NEED TO STUDY THIS SUBJECT?

Students studying this subject will be required to have achieved a minimum of a grade 5 in their GCSE English Language and a minimum of 34 GCSE points.

 

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREPARE MYSELF TO STUDY THIS SUBJECT?

Watch a wide range of films and TV programmes. Regularly read the newspaper or news online, from a high quality source such as www.theguardian.com or www.bbc.co.uk. Try making films, doing photography, writing and / or making your own blog using your camera phone and free software. 

 

WHERE CAN THIS LEAD ME?

Many of our students go to university to study a media or related subject, although the A Level can be used for entry to most undergraduate courses.  Examples of degrees that our students study include  Media Production, Media and Communication, Journalism, TV and Film Studies, Visual Effects, Advertising and Marketing, Digital Media.

Some of our students progress to apprenticeships and employment in fields such as television, digital media, PR, games, web design, film, advertising and marketing, journalism, social media, education, community arts.

 

WHAT ARE THE ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR THIS SUBJECT?

As part of the course we organize trips to the London Film Festival and other media and film related events. Many of our students also take part in the BFI Film Academy. There are opportunities to take part in competitions; attend work internships such as at Wieden and Kennedy advertising agency; get involved in our dedicated Leyton production team; community arts projects.
