WHAT IS THE COURSE ABOUT?

A Level Film Studies will enable you to explore film as an art form, a communication medium and an industry. You will be encouraged to explore and appreciate a broad range of films in different languages, as well as make your own short film.

 

DURATION OF COURSE:

2 years. This course is a two-year linear A level. Grading is through external examinations, internal assessment and external moderation.  

 

WHAT UNITS/TOPICS WILL BE STUDIED?

The NEA (coursework) element is worth 30% of the A Level. For this, you will create a short film with an evaluation. There are two exams worth 70% taken at the end of the course. One unit is a detailed study of specific British and American films. For the second unit, you will learn about a range of film movements and issues, both contemporary and historical. This includes documentary, experimental film, short film and global cinema.

 

WHAT DO I NEED TO STUDY THIS SUBJECT?

Students studying this subject will be required to have achieved a minimum of a grade 5 in their GCSE English Language and a minimum of 34 GCSE points.

 

WHAT CAN I DO TO PREPARE MYSELF TO STUDY THIS SUBJECT?

Watch a lot of films! Try to expand your scope by watching films in a foreign language or from before you were born. You can also experiment with filmmaking using your mobile.

 

WHERE CAN THIS LEAD ME?

Many students choose to go to study Film Studies and related degrees at university, these include Journalism, Scriptwriting, Media and Film Production. Film Studies A Level is a well-established academic qualification and so also useful for university disciplines such as Sociology, Cultural Studies, History and English. The UK film industry is vast and growing, so there are plenty of vocational opportunities for those want to grab them.

 

WHAT ARE THE ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES AS PART OF THIS SUBJECT.

As part of the course we organize trips to the London Film Festival and other film related events. Many of our students also take part in the BFI Film Academy. Recent guest speakers have included Oscar Nominated Film Composer Gary Yershon. There are opportunities to take part in competitions; attend work internships such as at Wieden and Kennedy advertising agency; get involved in our dedicated Leyton production team; community arts projects.
