What is the course about?

This course provides an excellent preparation for careers within the sport and fitness industries and can support entry into higher education. It is a vocationally delivered course and therefore develops the skills and knowledge students will need to thrive in a professional sports and fitness environment. Students are assessed through written exams, project practical assessments  and assignments based upon real-life sporting scenarios. Leyton has a thriving sport department with outstanding facilities. This course is equivalent to one A level.

 

Duration of course:

Two Years.

 

What units/topics will be studied?

Units include: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport, The Physiology of Fitness, Assessing Risk in Sport, Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise, Fitness Training and Programming, Psychology for Sports Performance and Sports Nutrition.

 

What do I need to study this subject?

You should be able to demonstrate an interest and enthusiasm for sport. Completion of GCSE PE or BTEC Level 2 Sport in school is beneficial. Experience of engaging in sport as a performer, coach or official is also preferable.

 

What can I do to prepare myself to study this subject?

Where can this lead me?

To higher education to study a sport-based degree or to train as a PE teacher. To employment, either before or after a degree, in the sport and fitness industry or as a coach.

 

What are the enrichment opportunities as part of this subject?

Students will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of recreational, developmental and competitive sporting activities through the college sports programme. Opportunities are also provided for students to gain skills through completing one or more of the following qualifications: L2 Award in Community Sports Leadership, L3 Award in Higher Sports Leadership and YMCA L2 Fitness Instructor – Gym-Based Exercise.
