What is the course about?
Studying Biology at A level is absolutely fascinating, you’ll find yourself engrossed, entertained and enthused. The course is very academic and so suits individuals with a good work ethic. We have high expectations and standards so you must be prepared to work hard. You will gain a wealth of new skills including mathematical skills, data processing skills, laboratory skills, analytical skills and evaluative skills. You’ll explore lots of topics some you will recognise and some will be new.

Exam board: Edexcel.

Duration of course: 2 years.

What units/topics will be studied?
Throughout the course you will study Cells, Biochemistry, DNA and DNA technologies, Plants, Ecosystems, Gas Exchange, Circulatory System and plenty more.

What do I need to study this subject?
You need at least 5 A*-C grades at GCSE with at least a grade B/6 in Maths and C/5 English language as well as BB in Double Science. You also need an average GCSE score of 36 or above.
Though this is Biology, it is important to have a good level of English as the questions asked in the exams use language that can be difficult to access.

What can I do to prepare myself to study this subject? 
To prepare yourself for studying this subject you must ensure that you have understood all of the topics you a currently studying at GCSE level.

Where can this lead me?
Biology is highly valued by universities and employers as a subject that prepares candidates in critical thinking and the ability to reason out or explain data. You can progress on to degree courses in Biology, Medicine (a vital requirement), Dentistry, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Radiography and many other courses.
N.B. To study a science at degree level, you are often required to study two sciences at A Level.

What are the enrichment opportunities as part of this subject?
We have a vast number of enrichment activities on offer within Biology. We have our newly developed Ecology garden where we will need a team to help maintain it over the year. We offer the ‘LSC Biohackers club’. Throughout the year we have out SUIT (Science University and Industry Talks) guest speakers to talk about various careers in Science. We also run a competition where you can win a prize for reviewing a Biology themed book.
