What is the course about?
This is a one-year course that prepares you for further education in Art and Design or employment in a related industry. BTEC First courses can be combined with GCSE subjects such as Mathematics or English, if appropriate. The course is equivalent to four GCSE grades A*-C.
Exam board: University of the Arts London Awarding Body - this is a specific highly regarded University exam board.
Duration of course: One year full-time.
What units/topics will be studied?
You will study units that include drawing and painting, printmaking, graphics, fashion and textiles, moving image and 3D design. You will also research and analyse a range of art and design practice, including making trips to museums and galleries.
You will complete 7 units covering the range of skills above and be assessed on your project work. Your last unit is the Final Major Project and it is the grade you get for this that is the grade for the qualification.
You will also complete a work related project, but this will not be assessed as part of the qualification.
What do I need to study this subject?
You should have mainly C/D grades at GCSE.
Plus specifically grade A*-C in Art and Design, A*-E in English Language and A*-E in Mathematics.

Where can this lead me?
You can progress onto either the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design (you require a Merit or Distinction at Level 2) or A levels. There are a range of careers available, including advertising, fashion/textile design, interior design, illustration, product design, photography and digital imaging, marketing/PR and multimedia/web design.
What are the enrichment opportunities as part of this subject?
There are visits to galleries, museums, degree shows, workshops and opportunities to meet artists and designers.
