What is the course about?
This is a two-year course that prepares you for higher education in Art and Design or employment in a related industry. A UAL Extended Diploma course can be combined with an A level. It is equivalent to three A levels.
Exam board: University of the Arts London Awarding Body - this is a specific highly regarded University exam board.
Duration of course: Two years full-time.
What units/topics will be studied?
You will study units that include drawing and painting, printmaking, graphics, fashion and textiles, photography, moving image and 3D design. You will also research and analyse a range of art and design practice, including making trips to museums and galleries.
You will complete 8 units covering the range of skills above and be assessed on your project work. Your last unit is the Final Major Project and it is the grade you get for this that is the grade for the qualification.
You will also complete a work related project, but this will not be assessed as part of the qualification.
What do I need to study this subject?
You should have five GCSE grades A*-C including Art and Design or a Merit/Distinction in Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design.

Where can this lead me?
You can progress onto Foundation Studies or directly onto a specialist degree course. There are a range of careers available, including advertising, fashion/textile design, film and TV (post-production), interior design, fine art (such as painting, sculpture, print making), illustration, product design, photography and digital imaging, marketing/PR and multimedia/web design.
What are the enrichment opportunities as part of this subject?
There are visits to galleries, museums, degree shows, workshops and opportunities to meet artists and designers. There is an opportunity to go on a subsidised field trip abroad.
