Course Levels Explained

The courses we offer

A Levels

Most A level students aim for a place in higher education but A levels are suitable for a direct entry into many areas of employment. A Levels develop and test knowledge and understanding of particular subject through examinations and, in many cases, coursework, as well as developing analytical and critical abilities.

Most students will 3 A levels with all exams at the end of the second year. We will give advice on appropriate combinations.

Vocational Courses

These courses focus on particular areas of work, such as business, caring and science, and are designed to equip students with the skills to follow a particular career. They are offered at three levels: Level 3, Level 2 and Foundation Learning. Level 3 vocational qualifications (BTEC & University of Arts) are well-established ways of gaining entry into higher education. All vocational courses are characterised by an assignment-based approach.

We offer Level 3 Extended Diplomas (equivalent to three A level grades), Level 2 Extended Certificates or Diplomas (equivalent to three or four GCSE grades A*-C) and BTEC Level 1 courses as part of Foundation Learning.

We also offer Level 3 Certificates (equivalent to one AS) most of which can be converted into L3 Subsidiary Diplomas (equivalent to one A Level). It is possible to study either a package of 3-4 Certificates or mix them with A levels.

Foundation Learning

We offer BTEC Level 1 Diplomas in the following subjects: Business, Travel and Tourism and Health and Social Care. These courses are combined with qualifications in Work Skills and students will have the opportunity to complete GCSE or Functional Skills qualifications in Maths, English and ICT. These courses help to prepare students for employment and progression to higher level courses.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

These are full-time, one year courses and help students improve their English and a range of other skills.  They are offered as discrete courses or combined with BTEC vocational subjects. Students progress according to their ability.

GCSE Mathematics and English

These subjects are available, as appropriate, to students who have just missed a grade C in Year 11. They can be combined with other courses. Students who have not obtained at least a D grade in Mathematics may take the access to GCSE course.
