Pianist and BBC Music Magazine award winner, Ivana Gavric visited Leyton Sixth Form College to perform a recital of music by Ravel, Beethoven, Janacek and Grieg.
As part of the new ‘Music at Leyton’ initiative Ivana was also able to meet with A Level Music students to discuss music and the life of a concert pianist.
Items up for discussion included Beethoven’s music, Ivana’s practice routine, and the other composers whose work she was performing.
Lesther Encarnacion, one of the students taking part, says, “it was a big thing for me to meet with a professional musician, especially one that is internationally known. It was good to hear her share her musical knowledge and I was able to ask her about when she studied for her A Level!”
Ivana is a great exponent of Beethoven’s music and A Level Music students are currently studying Beethoven’s Septet. Ivana’s enthusiasm for the composer’s works was caught by the students who were also recently able to hear a performance of the Septet by members of the London Symphony Orchestra.
“Hearing the music live and speaking the actual musicians who perform it makes a real difference,” says Lesther. “It’s really brought the A Level to life”.
The ‘Music at Leyton’ initiative continues in the new year with visits from the Academy Harp Ensemble and Piatti String Quartet.
Students studying A Level Music showcase some of their best performance work.
