The Royal Academy of Music Harp Ensemble was formed in 1993 by Skaila Kanga with the aim of giving harpists an opportunity to play in a ‘harp orchestra’ and to perform newly commissioned works with other instruments and voices. The success of the group has been highlighted by the many concerts given both at the Royal Academy of Music and other venues including the Wigmore Hall, St Martin in the Fields, Senate House, King’s Place, Regent Hall, Cardiff’s Millennium Centre, and Bury St Edmunds and Southwark Cathedrals. Both with the Academy and private sponsorship, Skaila Kanga has commissioned many premières for the harp department over the years. For this concert, the ensemble is joined by additional instrumentalists and soprano voice to showcase a number of recently composed works, including the world premiere of a work by Gareth Wood.
Programme: David Snell Prelude, Rock Blues and Latin, Gareth Wood Rhapsodie for solo cello and harp quartet (world premiere), Philip White Autumn Rain, Richard Bissill Gabriel’s Vision, Paul Patterson Avian Arabesques, Richard Bissill Sirens, Gareth Wood Waterless Seas.
