We are proud of our support for students. It has been consistently praised by inspectors over recent years and has been awarded top grades. The College has produced a video/DVD illustrating our outstanding student support. Copies are available on request.
You will be allocated to a tutor who will discuss your progress with you. Tutors will be able to give you advice on a range of issues and concerns including:
At LSC we pride ourselves on the support and care offered to our students to help them achieve their academic goals. All of our tutors are trained in the essential skills of pastoral care to provide students with personal guidance and advice whilst they are studying at College. Our tutors work with students to develop Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), review and support student progress and give advice on careers and higher education. All students will develop their ILPs through the tutorial to help them plan, prepare and improve their own performance in their studies.
The College provides a counselling service and students have access to an educational psychologist and advice on welfare, health and financial issues.
Leyton Sixth Form College has a designated person to support students with welfare and support needs. This may include:
We have a wide range of resources available to us and are able to refer students to external agencies if necessary. We also have an in-house counsellor from Waltham Forest Face to Face counselling service and a full-time Connexions Personal Adviser for all student progression needs.
Around 400 LSC students go on to university each year, including students from both A level and Advanced vocational courses. They are well prepared for all universities and courses. These include:
Oxford , Cambridge , Imperial, Edinburgh , UCL, LSE, Bristol and others. Some go to specialist art and music schools and colleges. They read a vast range of subjects like Medicine, Dentistry, Modern Languages, Aerospace Engineering, Economics, English, Business subjects and many others.
Both A level and Advanced vocational students can take part in a range of special events, including preparation for application and interview, visits to universities, residential study programmes and an annual three-day higher education conference attended by university lecturers, former students and other organisations.
Our programme provides up-to-date information on all aspects of university education. It tries to answer questions that you may have about tuition fees, where to apply and how to apply. A guidance service is available in the summer to advise students after the exam results come out.
There is a computerised careers suite with a wide range of resources and our own staff who work with careers advisers from Connexions. All students are entitled to careers interviews.
A full programme ensures that all students have the advice needed to progress to higher education, to careers or to a further course at Leyton or another college.
A work experience programme is built into vocational courses and offered to all A level students. We can help to arrange voluntary work for students too.
Leyton offers some of the most generous financial support around via the EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance) Scheme, the Hardship Fund and the Learner Support Fund for students who qualify. This can mean a weekly payment plus a bonus for completing your course and passing. Ask for details at your interview.
We give all students a copy of our Charter. This describes our services, your rights as a student and what you are entitled to expect from the College. Students also have access to College policies and procedures and the formal complaints procedure.
All students are given an attractive working diary and reference book. It includes the College year planner, student study and action planner, College plan and list of services. The College expectations and policies on work and attendance are included, together with advice on financial and personal welfare.
Throughout the year many students have the opportunity to attend subsidised residential study conferences, day conferences, revision courses and residential field trips to supplement their work in College.
Leyton Sixth Form College operates an open-access policy, welcoming students of all abilities, races, faiths, gender, sexuality and national origin. The College has special access for students with disabilities, clear policies on race, gender, sexuality and disability, and does not tolerate discrimination in any form. The College provides a range of courses at all levels for full-time students aged 16 to 19.
