Performance Studies: AS and A2 Level
BTEC National in Performing Arts is a two-year full-time, practical, skill-based performance course, equivalent to three A levels.
Course details You will study Performing Arts full-time, with the option of studying one extra A level, according to ability. You will study acting, singing, dance and production skills, in order to give you a really broad creative training, with many opportunities to perform.
How is it assessed? Most of the work is project-based, and all is internally assessed by the Performing Arts team.
Course duration Two years full-time.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have five GCSE grades A*-C including Drama or another expressive arts subject, and a keen interest in theatre and performance.
Where can this lead me? The course can lead to drama school for professional acting courses or a degree, or to university to study drama or humanities at degree level. Our students have performed at the National Theatre and on Eastenders. Recent graduates have gained places on top performing arts courses, such as the Acting degree at East 15 Acting School, and the BA Hons degree in Drama at Middlesex University.
What are the enrichment opportunities? The College runs a wide range of theatre visits and other performances throughout the year. The department has regular visits from professional actors, singers and performers.
BTEC First in Performing Arts is a practical, skill-based performance course. It is an ideal introduction to the two-year BTEC National in Performing Arts, and students who are successful on this course may have the opportunity to progress. The course is equivalent to four GCSE grades A*-C.
Course details You will study Performing Arts full-time, with an emphasis placed on developing your acting skills and an understanding of the Performing Arts industry. There will be an opportunity to perform in a play in the summer term.
How is it assessed? Most of the work is project-based, and all is internally assessed by the Performing Arts team.

Where can this lead me? The course can be followed by the BTEC National in Performing Arts or an A level programme.
What are the enrichment opportunities? There are theatre visits and other performances throughout the year. The Performing Arts department has regular visits from professional actors, singers and performers.
This course is both practical and academic and is suitable for students who have achieved a grade 5 (or above) standard in any instrument or voice.
Course details The course develops skills and knowledge in a systematic way, expanding understanding of music history, analysis, harmony and aural training. Practical options include composition and performance.
How is it assessed? The courses culminate in written examinations and practical performance for assessment.

Where can this lead me? Students find that these courses expand and consolidate their musical experience, either for personal development or as a preparation for higher education.
This course is for students who wish to improve their musical skills and succeed in a highly competitive musical world. It is equivalent to three A levels.
Course details Study covers all areas of music performance and you will be provided with an insight into the way the music business operates. All students are given regular opportunities to perform and benefit from the input of a wide range of visiting musicians.
How is it assessed? This BTEC National Diploma is assessed through practical assignments and written work.

What do I need to study this subject? All applicants need to take an audition, and should have four GCSE grades A*-C.
Where can this lead me? Recent graduates of the course have found places at Trinity College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Birmingham Conservatoire, and Leeds College of Music, as well as many universities. The course can be a stepping stone towards a career in music.
Performance Studies is a practical-based subject that also examines the theories and contexts of Drama, Dance and Music.
Course details You will study two units in each year. In AS you will devise work in Drama, Dance and Music and also study the theories of different performance practitioners. In A2 you will look at performance topics, and do two further performances.
How is it assessed? At AS, the course is 70% written and practical coursework, internally assessed, and 30% written examination, externally assessed. At A2, the course is 30% written examination, externally assessed, and 70% performance work, externally assessed.
Course duration One year at AS level. One year at A2 level.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have five GCSEs grade A*-C, including Drama or another expressive arts subject, together with an interest in theatre and performance.
Where can this lead me? You may progress to university to study drama or humanities at degree level, or to drama school for professional acting courses or a degree.
