Government and Politics: AS and A2 Level
This is a stimulating course addressing issues from our everyday lives. Decisions made at local, national and European level affect us all. Government and Politics is not just an academic discipline but a course which will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to play a full part in the political process. You will develop the important qualities of independent thinking and evaluation of rival views, as well as clear thinking and writing.
Course details Students take two units at AS level, and this is followed by a further two units at A2 looking at international politics and political ideologies (such as anarchism, liberalism, conservatism and socialism) for those students seeking an advanced award.
How is it assessed? All units are assessed by written examination, and there is no coursework element.
Course duration One year at AS level. One year at A2 level.
What do I need to study this subject? You should have five GCSE grades A*-C, including grade A*-B in English Language.
Where can this lead me? The course is highly regarded by universities and employers because of its analytical and discursive nature. It can also provide an excellent academic foundation for careers in the civil service, local government, research (trade-unions, think-tanks, working for MPs), law, media, teaching, social work, and charities.
What are the enrichment opportunities? Trips have included visits to Parliament and City Hall (Mayor of London's Question Time), conferences featuring high-profile MPs and a BBC political radio programme. Local MPs and councillors have spoken at the College. Students may contribute to a politics newsletter examining current political issues.
