Accounting: AS and A2 Level

This course will help you understand how and why organisations produce and use financial and management accounts in order to help them run more efficiently.

Course details There are four units that introduce and develop financial and management accounting. You will learn the central concepts and procedures of accounting, and how to apply these to solve business problems. You will further learn how to use accounting to help make business decisions, selecting from a range of alternatives within the social and legal environment that businesses operate.

How is it assessed? Each year is assessed by two exams, totalling three hours for AS, and a further four hours for A2. You can pay to resit exams in order to improve your mark. You will also complete a number of formal internal assessments to test your knowledge and skills, which do not go towards your final mark.

Course duration One year at AS level. One year at A2 level.

What do I need to study this subject? You should have mainly A*-B GCSE grades, including an A*-B in both English Language and Mathematics. You will need to pass AS in order to progress to A2.

Where can this lead me? A levels will provide access to careers in management, industry and most professions, or HND level study and degrees such as finance, business, marketing, management and accountancy. Should you wish to move into professional accountancy, you may gain exemptions from the professional body's qualifications.

What are the enrichment opportunities? Last year, students visited the London Metal Exchange, and attended a Globalisation conference at Harrow College. In addition, we ran in-house sessions given by an A level examiner to enhance examination success.

Business Studies: AS and A2 Level

Business Studies involves looking at how businesses plan, produce and market their products. You will study how they raise money and make money. You will cover how they recruit and motivate their workforce. You will learn to examine how they build a strategy that could lead to success in the face of a changing world.

Course details There are four units covering how to plan, finance and manage a business, how to develop strategies for business success, how to manage change and how to deal with the changing environment in which businesses operate.

How is it assessed? Each year is assessed by two exams, totalling 2 hours and 45 minutes for AS, and a further 3.5 hours for A2. You can pay to resit exams in order to improve your mark. In addition, you will complete a number of formal internal assessments to monitor your progress on the course.

Course duration One year at AS level. One year at A2 level.

What do I need to study this subject? You should have five GCSE grades A*-C, including English Language and Mathematics. You will need to pass AS in order to progress to A2.

Where can this lead me? Passes in two or three subjects at A level provide entry to HND or degree level courses at university. A levels will also provide access to careers in management, industry and most professions. Degree subjects include: marketing, management, economics and accountancy.

What are the enrichment opportunities? Our enrichment programme is expanding, and includes a leadership course at the National Maritime Museum , as well as attending conferences along with hundreds of other business students, with talks from business people and chief examiners.

Business: BTEC Introductory Diploma

This course is aimed at students who are interested in making a career in business. It will suit those hoping to improve on their Year 11 results and enter further study, or move directly into training or employment.

Course details The course is made up of eight units. You will have the opportunity to study the different types of jobs and organisations in business, customer service and communication skills.

How is it assessed? All units are internally assessed by teachers on the course. Each unit is assessed using the grading criteria of Pass, Merit and Distinction. All units have to be completed to achieve at least a Pass level.

Course duration One year full-time.

What do I need to study this subject? You should have BTEC Entry level and/or you must be able to show an active interest in business at interview.

Where can this lead me? Students can progress to BTEC First qualification in Business, work or vocational courses such as secretarial qualifications.

What are the enrichment opportunities? Each student is expected to undergo work experience to see at first hand how the real world of business is conducted. Trips and visits include a trip to France or Belgium , Thorpe Park , Harrods, Bluewater and Lakeside shopping complexes Coca-Cola manufacturing plants.

Business: BTEC First Diploma

A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You will develop the knowledge and skills to complete projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations. The course is equivalent to four GCSE grades A*-C.

Course details The course is made up of six units: three core units provide a general foundation and three specialist units will introduce learners to particular topics in more depth, during which you will have the opportunity to explore how businesses operate.

How is it assessed? All units are internally assessed and graded by teachers. To get the diploma, you must at least pass all units.

Course duration One year full-time.

What do I need to study this subject? You should have BTEC Introductory Diploma at least Merit grade, four GCSE grades A*-D, including English Language and Maths, or another related level 1 or 2 qualification.

Where can this lead me? With further training or study, learners may progress into business-related careers such as accounting, administration, customer service, finance, IT, personnel or sales. The course gives a very good preparation both for employment and more advanced courses such as a BTEC National Award, Certificate or Diploma in Business or a BTEC National Award or Certificate in e-Business.

What are the enrichment opportunities? An invaluable part of this course is that each student will be expected to start up and run a small business, with colleagues, within the Young Enterprise Scheme. Visits are an integral part of the course: for example, a trip to France is organised every year to include a presentation by P&O Ferries. Work experience is undertaken.

Business: BTEC National Certificate

This is a practical and work-related course aimed at students who are interested in making a career in business. You are encouraged to focus on a particular subject area and develop a range of specialist skills and knowledge in this area.

Course details The certificate is made up of twelve units. There are four core units which all students take and a further eight specialist units allow individuals to pursue particular career paths in some depth. Units include: Resources, Human Marketing, Management and Communication.

How is it assessed? All units are internally assessed and graded by teachers. To get the certificate, you must at least pass 10 units.

Course duration Two years full-time.

What do I need to study this subject? You should have five GCSE grades A*-C including English Language, or a Merit at Vocational level 2, e.g. BTEC First. You will need a high standard of written and spoken English, the ability to use and understand numbers and good IT skills.

Where can this lead me? Most students progress onto university degree courses in Business, or to professional qualifications such as those offered by the Chartered Institutes of Marketing, Management Accountants and Personnel Development. You will receive exemptions if you have successfully completed certain units of the BTEC National course.

What are the enrichment opportunities? Many visits are held throughout the two years, including the Coca-Cola manufacturing plant. All students are required to set up their own business within the Young Enterprise Scheme. A two-week work experience placement is also arranged.
