Applied Science: AS and A2 Level

Applied A levels are vocational alternatives to traditional A levels. It is possible to combine them with traditional A levels.

Course details The first year consists of six AS units dealing with concepts of the scientific method and introductory work in all three sciences. The second year consists of six A2 units split between Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which explore these topics in greater detail.

How is it assessed? Four units are assessed by an external test. Assessment of the other eight units is by coursework consisting of both practical and theory-based work.

Course duration One year at AS level. One year at A2 level.

What do I need to study this subject? You should have at least four GCSE grades A*-C, including a CC in Double Science and either a C in English Language with a D in Mathematics or a C in Mathematics with a D in English Language.

Where can this lead me? Students who complete the course successfully can enter higher education or employment. Past students have gone on to study pharmaceutical science, biomedical science, biochemistry, engineering, IT, chemistry, microbiology and neurology.

What are the enrichment opportunities? Students in the second year will have an opportunity to participate in the Comenius project which gives some students the chance to work with and visit students in Germany and Hungary.

Applied Science: BTEC First Diploma

BTEC First courses are vocational alternatives to traditional GCSEs. The Applied Science course covers the basic principles of biology, chemistry and physics, their applications in medicine (diagnosing and treating illness) and how science contributes to society.

Course details The course is made up of six units divided approximately equally into Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Most students combine the course with improving their grade in either GCSE English Language or Mathematics. There is also the opportunity to develop key skills in IT.

How is it assessed? Each of the six units is assessed internally through tests, practical investigations or research assignments. There is no external assessment.

Course duration One year full-time.

What do I need to study this subject? You should have mainly D grades at GCSE including Double Science, Mathematics and English Language. However, some flexibility is possible.

Where can this lead me? You can progress to the AS Applied Science course, separate AS Sciences or employment.

What are the enrichment opportunities? There is an educational trip at the end of the course.
