Leyton Sixth Form College was assessed by Ofsted in 2016 where it sustained its grade of ‘Good’ in every single category of its provision.
In the summary of key findings, the inspectors state ‘the Principal provides excellent leadership; with this senior leadership team and governors, he has promoted an excellent culture and ethos, strongly focused on developing the craft of teaching and supporting learners to succeed’.
The report highlights that students feel welcome, safe and secure and ‘safeguarding arrangements are excellent’. This is because ‘staff have created and sustained a highly inclusive environment, where learners feel safe, work well together and enjoy their studies’.
The ‘quality of teaching, learning and assessment’ are heavily praised. ‘Teachers set high expectations of their learners with regard to the quality of their work and standards of behaviour’.
Similarly ‘support is very effective and is tailored well to meet individual needs’. Inspectors recognised the high numbers of students going on to university, many to the most prestigious. This largely because ‘staff have a strong focus on promoting excellence’, amongst other things designing a ‘stretch and challenge programme’ that is highly successful.
Students at LSC, the report acknowledges, are introduced to the concept of ‘being professional learners’ and as a result student behaviour at the college is described as ‘excellent’. Students ‘participate in a wide range of activities which develop their social responsibility’.
Students at the college do very well academically with students on A Level courses gaining ‘very high’ qualifications. Both students on A Level and Vocational courses ‘make very good progress and the majority achieve or exceed the grades expected of them’.
The report outlines many reasons for the college’s success and recommends no change of policy or direction. Rather the inspectors endorse current approaches suggesting that ‘governors, leaders and managers maintain their strong focus on developing teachers’ skills to ensure that the quality of provision is consistently high across all subjects’.
A very gratified Principal Kevin Watson said: “Leyton has very clear values and a strong and united staff. We have stayed consistently true to what we believe to be important in providing a strong education for our students. We do nothing specifically to please Ofsted but it is always encouraging to receive external recognition of our commitment and accomplishments.”
