The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at Leyton Sixth Form College

In an increasingly competitive market for jobs and university places, here at LSC we believe all-round achievement should go hand-in-hand with academic attainment.

That’s why for the past 10 years the College has been committed to providing all 3 Levels of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) scheme - Bronze, Silver and Gold - at heavily subsidised costs. The College is so committed to the Award programme that we offer participation at Bronze level free to any student wanting to sign up.

As a fully licensed DofE centre, we have seen over 500 students successfully complete the expedition section of the Award and a 99.9% pass rate on all 3 levels.

Students who achieve the award demonstrate persistence, resilience, commitment and personal development over a period of time.  The Award is the world’s leading programme for young people, recognised by employers and universities alike.  In highlighting the activities you have undertaken as part of your DofE programme on your UCAS or college application form, you are telling the institution that you have an ambitious and positive attitude as well as a wide range of interests.

What will you get from it?

When a student completes the DofE programme they'll develop the skills and abilities they need to become more rounded, confident adults. They will see all kinds of new talents emerge as they achieve their Award including:

  • Self-belief and self-confidence
  • A sense of identity and initiative
  • A sense of responsibility
  • A real awareness of personal strengths
  • New talents and abilities
  • The ability to plan and use time
  • The ability to learn from and give to others in a community or group
  • New friendships formed
  • Problem solving, presentation and communication skills
  • Leadership and team-working skills

Many top universities are now looking for so much more than good grades and extra-curricular activities:  they are interested in young people who can demonstrate a genuine and committed interest in and around their chosen area of study.
